Reading During the Summer and Making a List

So, yeah I thought it would be interesting to keep a list of what is being called Readpocolypse (at least in my little universe – you’ll have to come up with your own name). I plan on reading a lot as the kids say these days. Of course this depends on kids, job, and any pop-up ADD afflictions that may arise.

First Up – Something Dark

I knew little of Cormac McCarthy before I read this story. I knew that he wrote No Country for Old Men only because I saw (and loved) the movie. So to kick of my summer reading I chose The Road. The story is simple enough – a father and son struggle to survive in what appears to be a nuclear holocaust. It a grim tale as CM paints the struggles of the two main characters in the tiniest details. Somehow McCarthy manages to make the mundane interesting. Even lyrical. At times he goes into prose. It is some of the most beautiful writing I’ve every experienced. It is also a story of how far man has fallen. This is a dark tale. Very dark. But it is also a lesson in faith and most of all, hope. Highly recommended.
