Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs

The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs by Carmine Gallo is a good read which doesn’t turn you into a Steve Jobs, but gives you some broad strokes into what makes Jobs so effective at innovation and having an overall vision. It’s best to start off by realizing there is only one Steve Jobs and he is completely original and his experiences are individualistic to him. Basically what that means is - you aint Steve Jobs.

On the other hand one can learn from him and his experiences and implement them into your life and into your career. The book gives good example not only from Jobs, but also from others as they use some of the principles the author gives to innovate their given spheres of influence.

There are a total of seven principles laid out in the book. They are made to make you think differently about your work, career, and your interactions with others and your environment.

1. Do What You Love – Do what you are really passionate about and everything else will fall in place.

2. Put a Dent in the Universe – Change things, and move things forward. Encourage other to join you, and share in the challenges.

3. Kick-Start Your Brain – Don’t be afraid to try new things even if they are way outside your normal range of doing things. The example given in the book is how Jobs studied calligraphy, and applied that knowledge to improving the readability to the computers Apple produced.

4. Sell Dreams, Not Products –If you’re trying to sell a product or a service, don’t just tell about the nuts and bolts of the stuff. Let the clients know they are special, even different, than “normal’ consumers and sell to their needs and wants.

5. Say No to 1,000 Things – Keep it simple, and stick to your knitting.

6. Create Insanely great Experiences – Create deep and lasting emotional connections with you clients and consumers.

7. Master the Message – Get people excited about your idea.
