Let’s get something straight – I’m not a movie reviewer. I’m just some dork trying to put his thoughts into words. The new movie Super 8 by J.J. Abrams is a wonderful creature feature, with great story and great acting to boot. It pays homage to the early works of Steven Spielberg, which for me was a wonderful trip back to my childhood.
I grew up in the seventies and Super 8 takes place during this period in time. Watching the movie I found myself paying less to what was going on in the movie, and more time remembering.
I remember going everywhere on my bike. It seemed I could go anywhere. I remember growing up in a community surrounded by friends and family. And I remember the girl with the hair like summer.
I remember the danger and excitement of being out at night, going on what at the time, seemed like adventures. Sometimes they were games like Kick-the-Can, and sometimes it was just hanging with your buds. That is until the girl with the hair like summer came by. She changed everything.
I remember making models and blowing them up by shoving firecrackers into my art and destroying it in spectacular fashion – from the roof of the house no less. I remember what it was like to be truly creative.
I remember letting go of my sisters death, and the need to move on. I remember moving half-way across the country to have a better life. It felt like escaping.
Movies are a tricky thing. They’re meant to entertain us in different ways. They can be a reflection of life past and present. And sometimes they make you think of the the girl with hair like summer, who in the end didn’t change everything. That girl had hair like autumn.
